A major earthquake of magnitude 8.2 hit the Northern coast of Chile Tuesday night. Tsunami alert has been proclaimed leading to evacuation of the coastal areas.
The authorities have reported five deaths caused either by getting crushed under the collapsed buildings or by heart attacks.
According to US Geological survey, the quake had a depth of 12 miles about 60 miles north of Iquique. And according to the Pacific Tsunami warning centre the wave measured at 2.11 meters.
More than 10 aftershocks followed the major earthquake as the city plunged into darkness. Roads had been blocked due to landslides causing traffic jams.
The residents remained calm as they evacuated the areas.
